SMS Backup & Bindings

Last updated: September 18, 2026

Published by Luminaera LLC. This app runs on your device. There is no Luminaera account and no Luminaera server for this app.

This app is not directed at children under 13.

App name: SMS Backup & Bindings.

What the app does

It backs up SMS on this device to an XML file you choose (Storage Access Framework). After a backup it also builds a local “bindings” list: which services sent verification SMS in that backup, plus labels you add yourself.

Restore writes SMS back into the device inbox. Android only allows that while this app is the default SMS app. Restore asks for that role, writes the messages, then tells you to switch back to your usual messaging app. This app is not a daily messenger.

A PIN is optional. If you set one, backup, restore, and the bindings list wait behind it. The PIN is stored only on the device as a PBKDF2 hash. You can turn it off. If you forget it, you may leave the unlock screen in the foreground for six hours to clear the PIN (the bindings data stays); leaving the app restarts that wait. You can disable that wait. From the same unlock screen you may erase this app’s local data (PIN, bindings database, in-app SMS copy). Files you saved to a folder stay. Uninstalling also deletes the on-device copy.

Data we read

DataWhy
SMS (READ_SMS) Backup and restore. Bindings are derived from the backup file, not from a live scanner.
SMS write / default SMS role (only during restore) Insert restored messages. Incoming SMS during that short window are written to the inbox; incoming MMS PDUs are written to the system MMS store so they are not dropped. MMS is not scanned for bindings.
Folder you pick To save and later reopen the XML backup.
Launcher apps on this phone Optional: on Check by service, match them against the bundled catalog so you can add those services as no-SMS rows. The list stays on the device.

The app does not request phone-number or phone-state permission. Dual-SIM labels come from SMS sub_id, from text in the backup, and from what you type.

This build does not read your mailbox and does not request internet permission. It does not list every installed package (QUERY_ALL_PACKAGES is not used). App names are not uploaded.

You may optionally compose an email (via the system share sheet) that lists service names you check, with phone numbers masked and no verification codes, to help Luminaera improve recognition. That send is yours; the app does not upload in the background. When you open mail, a browser, or another app through the system share sheet, those third-party apps and websites are governed by their own privacy policies.

What stays on the device

The archive in your folder is yours. Uninstalling the app does not delete that file. A plaintext XML backup in the folder you choose is stored under your control; you are responsible for keeping that file safe. A PIN-protected archive is encrypted; the same PIN is required to open it in this app. Uninstalling does delete the PIN, the encrypted database, and the working copy.

What we do not do

After you mark every service on Check by service as something other than Confirmed, you may optionally send services you confirmed by labeling SMS, each with one message you pick. Verification codes are masked. Auto-recognized services and no-SMS entries are not included. You send via the system email app to [email protected]. This app does not request internet permission and does not upload in the background.

Default SMS role

While this app is the default SMS app, the system delivers incoming SMS and MMS to it. The app writes SMS into the inbox and MMS PDUs into the system store, and does not provide a chat UI. Switch back immediately after restore.

RECEIVE_SMS and related manifest entries exist only so Android will grant the default SMS role during restore. The app does not keep a live SMS log.

Children

This app is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
